Is graffiti artist Banksy overated?

by banksy on March 9, 2010

One of his paintings was wiped off this week (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6575345.stm) and it caused a bit of a storm in the art world. But do you think his work is relevant modern satire or is he just living off the hype of his mysterious existence.

Maybe getting there, now he’s well know there is hype.
But compared to most other graffiti definitely not. Intelligent, well executed graffiti is an absolute rarity. Go through any town…
People actually enjoy seeing his graffiti. Hey, if I’d have a house wall, I’d let him do graffiti on it… It makes cities are more interesting place.
I don’t care if he is using stencils or not, making a good stencil is an art too.

It beggars belief really! HUGELY over rated! I’ve seen better art produced by children in my daughters infant school. What is amazing though is the sappers who spend a fortune on unsigned work! Someone somewhere is have such an enormous laugh at their expense – all the way to the banksy!

Banksy is very talented, and as an artist not that well paid really.

Its just the ‘Graffitti’ tag (no pun intended) that people can’t see past, he is gifted.

It’s not really the caliber of work that gets Banksy props, the way I see it. He makes a statement, his own version of social commentary with each piece. He got into stenciling because he wasn’t a good enough graffiti artist. However, since most graffiti is freaking hard to read anyway, his work is of far more consequence. My estimate- Worth the hype.

You have to realize that Banksy’s work is conceptual in a lot of aspects. Judging based purely on the actual work he produces, yes it is very anecdotal , but you have to realize that is the statement he is making. We have the process and "genius" removed up to some extent. The graffiti aspect makes it an art-form purely for the people, The hype has played a lot in getting him/her/them famous, but the anonymity is also what questions the role of the artist in appreciating a work of art.
